Design leaders deVOL Kitchens and Plain English have shaken-up the traditional ideas of kitchen planning. While the ’golden triangle’ of the hob, fridge & sink relationship still apply, we’re seeing much more creativity in terms of how the configuration is achieved.
Open plan living – double islands
The rise in conversions and extensions to create large open plan spaces, that allow for multi-functional living is an ever-popular concept. Often, a feature wall of tall cabinets goes hand in hand with an island that includes either the hob or the sink, so that kitchen tasks become a central focus.
For the ultimate in luxury living – why stop at one island. If space allows, two islands provide double the under-counter storage opportunity. Adding an overhang or split-level worktop allows for sociability with family or friends. While adding downturn ends with slick mitred joints enable the surface pattern to flow seamlessly.
A single extra-large island could seem like a better choice, but they can limit the choice of material to those colours only available in XL slabs. Introducing a split-level worktop or second island are worthwhile considerations – as they widen the choice of stone worktops.
Reduce or remove wall cabinets
Concentrating storage within tall cabinets and under-counter areas, allows for wall cupboards to be kept to a minimum or removed entirely. The resulting sense of light & space this creates can be further enhanced by extending the stone vertically as tall upstands or wall cladding.
Shelves supported on decorative brackets are a lovely detail, that are growing in popularity. The advantage that open shelving allows, is to display your favourite crockery, ornaments or plants. Although the inspiration may have originated from low-tech, unfitted vintage styling, there’s no reason why minimalist schemes can’t steal and adapt the idea. Keeping shelves uncluttered with just a few well-chosen pieces are the key to success for a restrained, modern look.
Freestanding Dressers & designated Bars
We’ve established that adding individuality to projects is a key component in 2024. Where space allows, free standing cabinets can be used for a multitude of purposes. These include everything from breakfast cabinets housing appliances (barista-grade coffee machine, toasters and kettles), larder cupboards or dedicated drink dressers. These can be integrated into the scheme by using the same stone on the worktop area. However, if the rest of the scheme is relatively neutral, then a more patterned stone could be used here for added impact. For small countertop areas we have a great range of more exotic natural stone offcuts to choose from.
In essence, worktops are the finishing touch that bring a scheme together. We’ll be pleased to provide advice and guidance on how you can achieve the look you want, at a price you can afford.
