Speak to a Specialist

When planning a new kitchen, most customers focus on colour, material and price, including for worktops.  Many high street kitchen retailers will have a selection of stones, but often choosing the stone isn’t the most important decision; it’s who fabricates and installs it.

Two kitchens can use the same quartz slab and end up looking completely different depending on the quality of the fabrication. Edges, joins, alignment and finishing all depend on the people cutting and fitting the worktops.

So how do you know if you are picking a good fabricator?

Here are seven things worth considering before you commit.

1. They Template the Kitchen Themselves

A reliable stone fabricator always measures the kitchen in person.

Templating is where the accuracy begins. If measurements are passed through multiple companies, small discrepancies can occur and stone doesn’t allow for adjustment once cut.

Look for a company that:

  • Visits after cabinets are installed
  • Checks walls and levels
  • Discusses overhangs and details on site

We use the latest technology to digitally laser template and our experienced templater then translates the measurements to a CAD for the workshop.  All details are discussed with the customers at the templating appointment and stated clearly on paperwork for both the stone masons and the fitting team.  By paying this attention to detail we avoid any surprises on installation day.

2. Fabrication is Done In-House

Some companies outsource cutting and polishing. Others, like us, fabricate in their own workshop.

In-house fabrication typically means:

  • Better quality control
  • Consistent edge finishing
  • Faster turnaround
  • Clearer accountability

Because both the template and fabrication is done by our own team, if any questions arise at fabrication stage, it is just a conversation to get the answers.

Ask where the stone is actually cut.  This will tell you a lot about how the project will be managed.

3. They Encourage You to See the Stone

Stone varies naturally. Even quartz differs slightly between slabs.

A good fabricator encourages you to:

  • View slabs or samples
  • Confirm layout direction
  • Understand joins before cutting

This prevents misunderstandings and ensure expectations match reality.

Because we have a customer-friendly showroom, not only can we show you multiple samples and slab, we can also provide a consultative approach to choosing stone.  Our team are super experienced and knowledgeable so if you have ‘a look’ that you are looking to achieve we can guide you to the right stones.  Also, you can bring along any mood boards, paint samples or cabinet examples to match against.

4. They Explain the Joins and Layout

Worktops are rarely one single piece of stone.

A professional fabricator explains:

  • Where joins will sit
  • Vein direction
  • How corners will meet
  • What is structurally necessary

If layout isn’t discussed, you may only discover decisions after installation, when changes are almost impossible.

5. Installation is Done by Their Own Team

Installation quality matters as much as fabrication.

When the installers area part of the same company:

  • Communication improves
  • Responsibility is clear
  • Adjustments happen quickly

You avoid situations where the installation team blame measurements or suppliers blame installers.

6. They Provide Realistic Timescales

Stone worktops follow a sequence, template fabrication, installation.

A good fabricator provides a clear timeline and explains if certain steps need more time. For example, we generally schedule our installations 7-10 days after the template has been completed.

7. The Offer Aftercare Support

After installation you may still have questions about:

  • Cleaning products
  • Maintenance
  • Minor adjustments

We also leave our care kit with customers, including a mild detergent cleaner and the do’s and don’t of stone maintenance.  However, we know that even with the best care, accidents can happen.  We will continue support customers if the worst happens e.g. your quartz gets chipped.  Whatever happens, we are only a phone call away.

Many customers spend weeks choosing the right stone, yet only minutes choosing who installs it.

In reality, fabrication quality often affect the final kitchen as much as the material itself. The right fabricator ensures the worktop you choose looks the way you imagined.
