Kitchens Have Changed

Over the past few decades, kitchens have undergone significant changes.  Historically, kitchens were smaller rooms in the house, reserved purely for food prep however, now the kitchen is no longer just a place to cook, it is the social hub of the home.  Homeowners are looking for kitchen/dining style areas where they can cook, work, and entertain, and at the centre of that is the kitchen worktop.  The future of stone surfaces is changing also.

Being in business for almost 20 years, we have seen trends come and go but one thing remains, homeowners want surfaces that are beautiful, durable and future proof.  So what’s next for kitchen worktops, what does the future hold?

The Rise of Sintered Stone

If quartz has dominated the last decade, sintered stone is set to dominate the next.  This next generation material is made by replicating the natural formation of stone in high tech kilns. This results in ultra-dense slabs that are:

  • UV resistant
  • Waterproof
  • Heat and frost proof
  • Scratch resistant

Because of these factors, sintered stone is ideal for outdoor kitchens, one of the fastest growing design trends.  And because it is available in thinner formats (20mm and 12mm) it lends itself to modern designs.

Sustainability at the Core

More homeowners are interested in the provenance of their stone and the environmental aspects.  The future of kitchen design is going to be all about responsible choices:

  • Responsibly sourced materials
  • Low-silica quartz to protect stonemasons and fabricators
  • Repurposing off-cuts into window sills, table tops etc.

We already have all this covered. Our stone is from trusted quarries, our Health and Safety processes already protect our team during fabrication process and all our off-cuts are available for reuse.

Bolder, Braver Designs

The recent trend has been for cool, calm whites with gently veining but all that is about to change as homeowners are embracing surfaces that make a statement.

  • Dramatic veining that rivals final art
  • Dark moody tones for a luxe look
  • Textured finishes like honed or leathered for a modern twist

Smarter Surfaces

Technology is quietly entering the kitchen, and surfaces are keeping up.  Future worktops will feature:

  • Hidden charging pads for phones
  • Seamless induction hobs built into stone
  • Digital templating for precision cutting and less waste

It’s design meets science making kitchens smarter.

Multi-Functional Living

Post-pandemic, hybrid and flexible working sees more people based at home, as a result kitchens are doubling up as offices, classrooms, and dining spaces.  Islands are bigger, and worktops need to handle everything from Teams meetings to tofu.

Stone surfaces are perfect for flexi-living, strong, stylish and built to last.

The future of kitchen surfaces is definitely bold, sustainable and smart.  And whatever stone you choose one thing is clear, your worktop will continue to be the heart of the home.
