A fireplace naturally draws the eye the moment you enter a room. Even when unlit, it anchors the layout, giving furniture a direction and the space a sense of purpose. People arrange seating around it, sit beside it and instinctively treat it as the centre of the room. Because of that, the material surrounding the fire matters and sets the tone of the room.

A well-chosen stone fireplace surround or hearth brings structure and weight to a space.  Whether you are restoring a period property or adding character to a modern living room, natural and engineered stone creates a finish that feels intentional rather than just decorative.

We fabricate and install bespoke stone fireplace surrounds and hearths using the same in-house processes we apply to kitchen worktops with templating , masonry  and installation.

Why Choose Stone For a Fireplace?

Fireplaces experience heat, ash and daily use. Many decorative materials struggle over time, but stone performs naturally in this environment.

Stone works well because it is:

  • Heat resistant
  • Structurally stable
  • Easy to maintain
  • Visually timeless

Unlike painted timber or tiled panels, stone ages well and tends to improve with use rather than deteriorate.

Hearths, Slips and Full Surrounds

We can help with a range of fireplace elements, whether you need a simple hearth replacement or a full surround.

Hearths

A hearth provides both safety and a visual grounding and we can cut hearths for:

  • Wood burners
  • Gas fires
  • Electric Fires
  • Open Fireplaces

We shape the edges and thickness to suit the style of the room, from minimal contemporary to traditional proportions.

Chamber Slips and Linings

Stone slips inside the recess create contrast to the frame the fire itself. These are particularly effective with stove and inset fires, where the texture enhances the depth of the opening.

Full Surrounds

For a statement feature, we can fabricate complete surrounds in marble, limestone effect quartz or granite. These can be traditional mantel styles or modern minimal frames.

Choosing the Right Material

Different materials create very different moods in a living space.

Granite

Works well in contemporary settings and with  stoves. It offers durability and subtle natural movements.

Quartz

Provides consistent colour and works particularly well in modern homes where you want clean lines and calm tones.  Quartz is better suited for soft heat sources such as electric fires.

Marble

Suited to period properties or softer interiors. It introduces gentle variation and classic character.

We can help you view suitable options in person so the fireplace compliments flooring, cabinetry and wall colours rather than competing with them.

Bespoke Templating and Installation

Fireplaces rarely have perfectly straight walls or floors, especially in older properties. This makes accurate templating essential.

We visit your property to measure directly and assess:

  • Levels and alignment
  • Clearances around the appliance
  • Edge detail

We then fabricate the stone in our workshop and install it ourselves, keeping the process clear and manageable.

Suitable for Renovations and Upgrades

Fireplace projects rarely happen in isolation, they are usually part of wider change in a room. Sometime a stove is bein installed in an existing chimney breast, something a older gas fire is being removed, and sometimes it is simply updating a surround that no longer fits with the house. In each case, the stone needs to work with both the appliance and the proportions of the room.

Modern stoves for example, often need a non-combustible hearth of a specific thickness and projection beyond the appliance. Replacing a tiled hearth with a single stone slab can immediately simplify the space and make it more architectural. In older properties walls and floor are rarely level so templating ensures the hearth sit correctly with gaps or awkward packing. Even small adjustment like changing the depth of the hearth, softening an edge profile or selecting a quieter stone can noticeably improve how balanced the fireplace feels in the room.

Because we fabricate each piece to order, we can adapt the size, finish and detailing to suit the building rather than forcing the building to suit a standard product. Whether the goal is to modernise, restore or simply refine, the right stone turns the fireplace from a leftover feature into a considered part of the interior.

A Feature That Lasts

Unlike decorative finishes that follow trends, stone fireplace surrounds tend to age well. They anchor the room and provide a sense of permanence.
